What’s the Official Name of This Decade?

Well, what do you know! We’ve got an astronomical problem on our hands and the government seems to be looking the other way. Imagine that. You’d think that they’d be the first to throw millions of dollars at a solution, their motto being: your tax dollars, our bureaucratic waste. And if we don’t solve this problem in the next seven years, people will be genuinely stumped every time the subject is broached.

What is this problem you ask? Never thought you’d ask. I’ll make it really simple: We have the seventies, eighties, nineties, and the… See what I mean? We don’t have a name for the current decade. I am braced to take the flack of this being called a right wing conspiracy. How so? How can you criticize a president if you can’t even mention the decade he presided over. The eighties you had Reagan. The nineties Clinton. So, the left will have to use a few more words to criticize this current administration (not to worry, there are plenty in the alphabet news agencies and the Democratic National Convention that will be honored to take up that challenge, free of charge - they have a good start already).

I am making this my personal awareness crusade. Some fight for freedoms and rights and justice. Me, I fight for a decade name. My audience is anyone willing to listen. Thus far, my reception has been cordial, that is, if consider “you don’t get out much, do you?” a cordial comment.

Zeroes is lame. Ohs is lamer. The Hundreds doesn’t fit. The Null Decade is fraught with negative connotations. What’s left?

I think I have an answer (how’s that for a straw man being knocked down?). Rather than watch normally intelligent people stumble over their words, I’ll tell you what to use: Ought or Aught or Ott, as in the rifle 30-aught 6 (sorry, exposing my 2nd Amendment leanings here). Simple. I’m proposing that the Federal Government immediately commission a study to look into the matter.
