The Rubber Sword of Humor - It Works!

Humor and comedy takes many forms, and the most pointed humor is that of the Rubber Sword. This occurs when someone makes fun of the actions of another group of people, an individual, or the government. And they do it in jest rather than just coming out and saying that a political leader is unfit to lead, a businessman is corrupt, a nonprofit group is failing in its mission, or a group of individuals is drowning in their own hypocrisy. After all, there are some things you just can’t say.

In fact, if you’ll recall during the last presidential election, no one was allowed to say anything in the media they would be detracting or disparaging to the then Junior Senator Obama, without being called a racist. In fact, the media protected him even after the first six or seven months in office. Some might say this is because his campaign spent $720 million in public relations and advertising getting him elected. And, if they were the bread and butter of the media, which was already hurting from competitive challenges from the Internet, they could not allow those campaign advertising and marketing dollars to dry up.

Once that money stream stopped, the media no longer felt that it had to prop up this podium pushing politician. And now we see on Saturday Night Live lots of jokes at the expense of President Obama’s reputation, or in this case lack thereof with approval ratings under 50%. His political opponents and yes, I am one, would say that they belong down around 10 or 15%. Nevertheless, the late night talk show hosts are getting a lot of good jokes out of this young president. In fact, it may be considered a godsend for the comedy writers that write the jokes for those shows.

And the citizens are laughing it up. Does this mean that President Obama is a one-term president? It just might be and he may go down as a president that was similar to Jimmy Carter or Herbert Hoover. Although our media and especially our late night talk show hosts are only using a Rubber sword on Obama, the reality is that people are laughing, because much of what they are saying is true. And I’d like to leave you with that as something to think about.
