Is Mary an Eternal Virgin?
Not only is it taught that Mary is an eternal virgin, but some would have you believe she is a co-redeemer with Jesus. Believe it or not, some believe that Joseph and Mary’s mother are also eternal virgins!
Oh yes, Mary was a virgin until she gave birth. It says that Joseph took Mary as wife and knew her not until Messiah was born. (Matt. 1:25) Then surely he knew her and she was a virgin no longer. If you recall, Mary was betrothed to Joseph for a while. Even though no marital relations took place, Mary had every intention to not be a virgin for very much longer!
I just don’t know what to say about Joseph and Mary’s mother being eternal virgins. Maybe I do. They must have taken that right out of the Bible, because it is not in there now! Why would I be accursed if I don’t believe Joseph and Mary’s mother are eternal virgins? Do you think Joseph had any idea Mary would be an eternal virgin? Do you think Joseph expect to be considered an eternal virgin? How about Marys’ mother?
It has been taught for centuries that Mary was sinless, was taken up to heaven without dying a human death and was crowned Queen of heaven. We should be educated, discerning and able to refute contradictions and unsound doctrine. (Titus 1:9) Aside from eternal virginhood, do you really think Mary of the Bible expected generations and millions of people to pray to her?
After waiting up to a year in the normal Jewish courtship and then 9 more months of pregnancy, I hope Mary and Joseph would have behaved like honeymooners! Surely Mary did enjoy her God invented and God approved marital relations as much as the rest of us!
