I think Descartes actually assumed animals were automata because of his religious views. He didn't believe they have souls, as far as I know.

I definitely agree that when there are good alternatives, animals should certainly not be used in testing. I can't say I've done much research into the subject though, but your video has raised my curiosity. Thanks. :-)

I should also mention that animal testing has not been working for cancer and AIDs research and yet we insist on relying on it. Is this not also 'bringing science to a halt'?

[cont'd]
I will not excuse it, however, one may say they did not have an alternative or they did not realize the depth of their actions. Rene Descartes even suggested that animals were machines. This may be because he thought that only humans had a pineal glands, or that animals did not have minds at all and therefore could not suffer.

This video is suggesting that because we have alternatives now, we do not need to experiment on animals. It is also a response to everyone who has said to me 'Scientific research would come to a screeching halt if we stopped testing on animals.'
In my opinion, if it is wrong now, I cannot give an exception to times before. [cont'd]

Interesting, but a lot of this seems to argue for phasing out animal testing, not that it has always been wrong or unnecessary. Insulin, polio vaccines, rabies vaccines, and lots of other medical treatments were discovered through animal testing, and we didn't have the technology/knowledge for computer models or tissue cultures back then. Was it still wrong to use animals in testing during that time, in your opinion?
