Is it advisable to use open source or not?

In the technological world full of innovations and hackers, certain computer software was made to allow users to utilize, modify, and develop the software with the ability to redistribute it again in a revised or unrevised form.

Based on the book “The Cathedral and the bazaar” by Eric Raymond, users are treated as a co-developer of the software.

Some users have advance knowledge and skills in computer especially in programming so in case a certain software is unstable, consumers can change the program and send it back or inform the programmers about the problem.

As Linus Law said that: “Given enough eyeballs all bugs are shallow”, which meant that if there are more watchers for problems such as bugs in programs there is a greater chance to cancel out all troubles in the software.

Advantage of Open Source Software (OSS)

  • One of the greatest benefit about OSS is that’s free, meaning it doesn’t cost anything. Users can check the system or program for problems anytime.
  • This leads to achieve a greater penetration on the market.
  • Some perceive OSS as independent due to its many “free” programmers are testing and arranging the troubles of the system.
  • Also, the software is flexible as thousands of programmers have the ability to modify the program on its stable state.

Disadvantage of OSS

  • As some sees it as reliable, OSS is not yet that well defined as the process of advancement is not that reliable.
  • Since it’s free and any user can modify the program, reliability check is hard to do as of the moment.
  • The production of many different OS License worsens the system because it’s harder to comprehend what the different implications of the legality between the licenses.
  • As confusing as the letters we type while programming, not all OSS Initiatives reached its goal.
